Downfall of Gaia - Interview 2015

Felipe: Dear, thank you very much for wanting to participate. I confess a follower of the group and the variability of your sound. Thank you very much for your disposition.
Downfall Of Gaia: Thanks a lot! Great to be a part of!

Felipe: First, what reason underlying the choice of the name of the group?
Downfall of Gaia: Back in the days we were looking for a name that fits to our sound and our lyrics. Most of our topics are dealing with the dark sides of living and negative situations. In greek mythology Gaia is mother earth/mother nature. Besides the warm and nice sounding of the name Gaia, the Downfall of Gaia fits very well to all of this!

Felipe: Could you make an introduction to the group: Path members and albums.
Downfal of Gaia: Downfall of Gaia is Peter (Guitar, Vocals) , Anton (Bass/Vocals), Mike (Drums) and me, Dominik (Guitar/Vocals). So far we released 3 full length records and 1 split LP, 1 Tour EP and 1 Demo. We had a few lineup changes on the drums. Past members are Hannes, Tim and Sven. All of them on drums.

Felipe: Your sound is so varied, intricate and reminiscent of other styles than trying to classify it becomes something random and very complicated. How do you understand, explain and describe your musical work? For me it is a mixture of styles that results in a violent, refined and refreshing work.
Downfall of Gaia: We don't limit ourselves to any specific genre. I guess that's the main reason why things sound like they do. We are influenced by a lot of great music and happenings in our life’s and we want to capture all of this in our music and really don't want to follow any clichés. We don't set ourselves a limit when it comes to songwriting.

Felipe: In what way, under what process, what thoughts came to build your sound?
Downfall of Gaia: Our sound is based on the dark sides of living. Most people have to struggle from day to day (in what way ever), so do we. The music itself is some kind of therapy. From a musical and a lyrical perspective.

Felipe: What musical and artistic groups could nominate as an influence when forming Downfall of Gaia? Personally, what are the musical groups that members of the Downfall of Gaia listen and enjoy?
Downfall of Gaia: As already said we are influenced by a lot of music/artists and really don't want to limit ourselves to any genre but bands that truly have been an amazing inspiration when it comes to Downfall of Gaia and those times when everything started are bands like Neurosis and Wolves In The Throne Room. Those bands really did a lot for us. But of course the musical views are growing over the years. Lately I’m totally enjoying the new record from Panopticon or MGLA.

Felipe: Is there any ideological, political or philosophical view that sustains and justifies your compositions or can explain the origins of the group?
Downfall of Gaia: Of course! Otherwise things wouldn't be possible. You have to share somehow the same views for important stuff like politics or ideologies when you are in a band that's playing a lot, a band that's spending a lot of time with each other. We are 4 very different characters but it's not that unimportant to see some things in the same light.

Felipe: Do any of you studied something in college? Who and what?
Downfall of Gaia: Peter did and finished a few years ago. He is an engineer. Toni also started with college years ago but didn't finish and preferred to focus on other stuff.

Felipe: Are you aware of any Latin American musical group? What group and what they think of it?
Downfall of Gaia: I really like Thy Light! It's a great band. Totally enjoying that stuff!

Felipe: What do you think of an American group called Neurosis? I personally think is very important in the formation of many of today's most advanced metal scenes.
Downfall of Gaia: As said a few sentences before Neurosis is definitely one of the most important bands for us! They opened the doors to a completely new world of music. Those guys did a lot for heavy music and it's great to see that they are still doing their thing!

Felipe: What about the language? I can understand that because you Germans your lyrics are mostly written in German, but, have you ever felt the influence of writing in English?
Downfall of Gaia: Till this point not really. I feel more free when I’m writing my lyrics in German just because of the fact that it's my mother tongue. I can play way better with words and ideas and write lyrics with a deeper meaning. But never say never. Maybe there will be a record with English lyrics sometime.

Felipe: Where did the inspiration come to write the lyrics? Ideas that reflect existentialists, chaotic feelings of unease and discontent are appreciated.
Downfall of Gaia: Most of the time those lyrics are out of life. Each record is a part of life and each record deals with a different topic. Topics that grabbed my attention around that time, stuff that was going on in my head. For our recent record I thought a lot about time and life. Things just changed so much in the last years and I sat down and started to think about all of it. You lose important people, you have to deal with really uncomfortable stuff. Things are changing. Always. And not always for good. But that's life. Also myself changed a lot. This is just happening on each record. Something that just doesn't stops in my head and that needs to get written down.

Felipe: Does the compositional work is group or someone out above the rest?
Downfall of Gaia: Usually Peter and me are preparing demos and melodies at home and after that the 4 of us get together. From that point each and everyone is involved into the songwriting. Most of the time the songs are already done before we meet but they can still change after everyone said what they feel.

Felipe: Besides music, do develop some other activity?
Downfall of Gaia: To be honest, unfortunately there is not that much time left. All of us have to work full-time besides the band.

Felipe: What do you reflect on the current situation being experienced in Europe for thousands of refugees? ¿They see you any solution?
Downfall of Gaia: The situation is pretty bad. It's a result of a completely wrong politic that took place over the last years. To be honest, I don't see a solution right now. At least not a satisfying for the refugees. And that's pretty sad!

Felipe: How is the recognition of the fans in Europe?
Downfall of Gaia: It's always a pleasure to tour Europe. So we can't complain and we are pretty thankful for the support!

Felipe: How difficult or complicated is wanting to live life playing Metal in Europe? Is there prejudice, contempt, discrimination from society by playing what you play and dress like you dress?
Downfall of Gaia: I guess it depends on where you are living in Europe. Of course from time to time there are still prejudices but most people aren't shocked anymore from a guy that's listening to or is looking like Metal. Can't shock anyone these days with an Iron Maiden or Slayer shirt anymore.

Felipe: What musical groups are listening to now?
Downfall of Gaia: For me right now it's a lot of Abigail Williams, Thulcandra, Panopticon, Nine Covens, Ghost Bath and stuff like that. Also totally into the side project from Greg Puciato (Dillinger Escape Plan) The Black Queen. I'm open for any genre as long as it's good.

Felipe: How has the reception of your albums by specialized media and fans?
Downfall of Gaia: The reception was pretty good. We don't take any of this for granted so we are thankful for each and everyone. But in the end we are doing all of this for us. Don't care that much about reviews or opinions. Of course it's always nice to read something positive about your band but all of this is just a subjective opinion.

Felipe: You are a new group, despite the large number of your discography. How do you envision the future of Downfall of Gaia, in the short, medium and long term?
Downfall of Gaia: We just hope to be able to do all of this as long as possible. It's the perfect medicine to break free from daily routine. Get to meet new people and places, get to know new stuff all over the world. It's something that we don't want to miss right now in our lives.

Felipe: Some kind of musical announcement, on tour, or some important news to convey?
Downfall of Gaia: There is stuff planned but can't talk about it yet.

Felipe: We deeply appreciate the time, willingness and desire to want to participate in this space. Any news, music or news release, have open doors in this part of the world. This space is for personal reflection or a farewell. Thank you very much and goodbye.
Downfall of Gaia: Thanks a lot for having us! Keep up the great work and hope to see you on the road soon!
